the Camphill Movement

Coleg Elidyr is a member of the Association of Camphill Communities.

The International Camphill Movement was started in 1940 by Dr Karl König, an Austrian pædiatrician.
Since then, the movement has grown to over 100 communities in 22 countries around the world.

The founding principle of all Camphill Communities is the right of respect and dignity of all human beings, regardless of their background or abilities.

It is Aliveness, that must be the guiding principle. ‘Aliveness’ in the teacher must pass over to ‘Aliveness’ in the pupils.

Joy and happiness for living, a love for all existence, a power and energy for work – Those are among the lifelong results of a right cultivation of feeling for beauty and art.

The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility.
Those are the three forces which are the very nerve of education.

Our highest endeavour must be to develop free human beings, who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives.

Rudolf Steiner

The work of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner forms the basis for all activities in Camphill.
Even more than 80 years after his death, his ideas are still both innovative and contemporary.
His philosophy is known as Anthroposophy.

At Coleg Elidyr, we offer a 2-year Camphill Introductory Course to introduce new staff to some of the ideas and principles that form the background to our work.
